Baby Teething Tips From your slc pediatric dentist

baby teething tips

Your newborn infant is born with 20 teeth hidden behind the gum line. Before you realize it, your cheerful baby has become irritable and prone to drooling regularly, as those teeth begin to emerge.

The first tooth typically emerges between 6 months and one year and can be hard on your little one. Today on the blog, Dr. Ari shares tips and remedies to help your teething baby.

Teething Signs in Your Baby

When your baby starts teething, it may be a challenging period. There are, however, a variety of baby teething strategies to assist in comforting your youngster. If your infant is approximately six months old (time varies), you may notice the following teething symptoms:

  • Gums that are either sore or sensitive
  • Drooling
  • Irritability
  • Chewing
  • A rash from drool around the mouth

Typically, the first tooth to develop is one of the bottom incisors. It is a good idea to check your baby’s mouth for any lumps that might indicate freshly emerging teeth. Teething may take longer for some newborns than others, so infants may experience symptoms months before a tooth appears.

How to Help Ease Teething Pain

Gently Massage Your Baby’s Gums

Applying pressure with a clean finger to your baby’s gums may help relieve the pain. Gently rub their gums and see how they react.

Massaging sore gums may assist your infant in relaxing and falling asleep.

Use a Cold Washcloth or Rag

Another idea to help soothe sore gums is to soak a clean washcloth in cold water for your baby to chew on. You can also place the cloth in the refrigerator to chill.

If your infant is chewing on something, even a washcloth, you should never leave them alone since this might pose a choking hazard.

Chilled Pacifier

If your child takes a pacifier, you can use it to cool down and calm their gums. Clean the pacifier and store it in the refrigerator. The cooling may numb the gums and reduce some of the discomfort.

Teething Toy

For a teething baby, a teething toy can provide them with something fun that also helps to soothe gums. There are many teething toys out there that you can purchase online. Make sure that you buy your toy from a reputable company that has had their products tested for safety.

Frozen treats

If your kid has started eating solid meals, you might try freezing some fruit to help calm inflamed gums. Chilled, mashed bananas are an excellent starting point! Other fruits can be placed in a mesh feeder for your baby to suck on. The mesh feeder will assist in preventing choking. Chilled apples, pears, or strawberries are just a few examples of fruit you might try. It’s important to keep an eye on your baby at all times while they are eating solid foods.

A popsicle or a little ice cream can also help alleviate discomfort and help soothe sensitive gums.

Additional Cuddling Time

Extra snuggle time is sometimes the most excellent approach to treating a baby in pain. Rocking your baby in an oversized chair or carrying your infant around the home (in a baby carrier) are also excellent options to help soothe them. The additional cuddling time will help you both get some much-needed slumber.

Medicated Pain Relievers

As a last option, you might discuss the possibility of supplying over-the-counter pain medicine with your doctor. These medications assist in relieving discomfort and allowing the infant to sleep. Again, your doctor can advise you on the proper dosage and the best sort of pain medication to use.

Tips for Feeding a Teething Baby

If your baby has moved onto solid foods, they may try to avoid eating when they begin teething. Many foods may cause your baby’s gums further irritation. They also may start drooling more which can also irritate your baby’s skin.

During this uncomfortable time, there are a few things you can try to help your baby feel more comfortable.

Bib for Drooling

It is beneficial to have your infant wear a bib when teething. A teething baby will have a propensity to drool. Make it a point to clean away drool from your baby’s chin and face to avoid additional irritation. To prevent a rash, your child’s face should be kept dry.

Soft Foods

Avocados, yams, mashed potatoes, and bananas, are all foods that are soft and won’t further irritate your little one’s gums. Be sure to monitor your baby at all times while they are eating.

Cold Foods

Cold foods such as smoothies and purées are another great way for your baby to receive the nutrition they need while helping with gum pain.

The Importance of Dental X-Rays For kids

the importance of dental x rays

Pediatric dental X-rays are an excellent tool to monitor your child’s oral health and tooth growth as they develop. Your pediatric dentist may use this tool to help provide an early diagnosis to improve treatment plans and outcomes. In today’s post, we will discuss the benefits, importance, and safety of dental x-rays for children.

How Do Dental X-Rays Benefit Kids?

my child has a toothache Salt Lake City Utah

Dental X-rays are necessary for both preventative and diagnostic purposes since they assist the dentist in understanding what is going on in your child’s mouth. Dental X-rays help children in the following ways:

Detection of Cavities

Cavities can be sneaky. Regular brushing and flossing might not always be enough, especially when it comes to those hard-to-reach spots. Most of the time, tooth decay will be visible to us; however, cavities can also develop between teeth. Dental X-rays illuminate areas between the teeth and under the gumline, helping dentists detect tooth decay earlier on.

Monitoring Teeth Development

As children grow, their dental needs evolve. X-rays provide a map of your child’s dental growth, showcasing how primary teeth give way to permanent ones. It’s not just about the teeth that are visible, it’s also about understanding the development of those yet to emerge. This comprehensive view allows dentists to effectively anticipate and manage potential issues, such as overcrowding or impacted teeth.

Orthodontic Assessments

Orthodontic treatments are not just for aesthetic purposes; they’re also vital for functional reasons. Dental X-rays can be instrumental in determining if and when a child might need braces or other orthodontic interventions. They help in assessing the alignment of the upper and lower teeth and jaws as your child is developing.

Identifying Bone Issues

Dental X-rays can also reveal the health of the bone surrounding the teeth. They can detect any signs of infection or abnormalities in the jawbone, which are critical in planning effective treatments. Early detection of such issues can prevent more severe complications in the future.

Trauma and Injury Detection

Accidents happen, especially with kids. Dental X-rays can be crucial in assessing the extent of oral injuries, helping in the immediate management and long-term care of dental traumas.

Are Dental X-Rays Safe for Kids?

The advancements in dental radiography, particularly digital X-rays, have enhanced the safety and efficacy of this tool. With lower radiation exposure and higher-quality images, digital X-rays are a game-changer in pediatric dental care.

Oral X-rays are a safe technique that helps your child’s dental health by discovering hard-to-see cavities and other oral health concerns. Dental X-rays are safe, painless, and children like seeing their teeth!

What Is the Best Age to Have Dental X-Rays?

Pediatric dentistry and silver fillings Salt Lake UT

While there is no set age at which your kid should have their first dental X-rays, it is recommended to start with X-rays as soon as their teeth begin to touch each other.

How Often Should Children Have Dental X-Rays?

Depending on your child’s oral health, they may only require them once every 18 months or up to twice a year to check for cavities or injuries.

“The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry advises that children get dental x-rays every 6 to 18 months, depending on their dental history” – Dr. Ari Hobfoll

Are X-Rays Uncomfortable for Children?

why see a pediatric dentist in slc

At Kaleidoscope Kids Dentistry, we handle X-rays lightheartedly and instructively. We want youngsters to feel at ease and confident about having their X-rays taken. We explain what an X-ray is and lead them through the procedure. We will show your child the picture of their teeth after the x-rays, which can be a lot of fun for them. For their comfort, we use the smallest x-ray sensors on the market.

Are Dental X-Rays Necessary?

Dental X-rays are a piece of the larger puzzle of comprehensive dental care for children. They complement other diagnostic tools and treatments, providing dentists with the complete picture needed to maintain and improve oral health.

Each child is unique, and so are their dental needs. Our Pediatric dentist, Dr. Ari understands this. Is Juice Bad For My Child’s Teeth?

Is Juice Bad For My Childs Teeth?

Is Juice Bad For My Child's Teeth?

kids dentist murray utah

Kids Dentist, Dr. Ari Hobfoll

Is Juice Really bad for my child's teeth? Yes.

Kids enjoy juice because it tastes fantastic, and parents love that their children drink juice since we are told that it is beneficial for them! After all, fruits are high in vitamins and nutrients that your youngster requires for their overall health.

While this is true, allowing your child to drink too much fruit juice or juice that really doesn’t have any actual fruit in it may cause more harm than benefit.

Today on the blog, our pediatric dentist in Murray Utah answers the question, “Is juice really bad for my child’s teeth?”

Isn't Fruit Juice Good for You?

The fact that juice is derived from fruit does not imply that it is nutritious. In reality, this delightful beverage may have a lot less nutritional value than you think! Many fruit juices such as mixed fruit juice blends, fruit juice cocktails, fruit juice drinks, and fruit punch typically include only trace amounts of juice.

Instead, our pediatric dentist in Salt Lake City explains that these beverages are loaded with added sugar, artificial sweeteners, and high-fructose corn syrup.

Even beverages made entirely of fruit juice may contain far more sugar than you believe. This is because the majority of popular fruits are high in natural sugar. A glass of apple, grape, or cranberry juice contains just as much sugar as a glass of soda!

3 Consequences of Drinking Juice

Did you know that the most frequent childhood ailment is cavities? While various things can contribute to children having a higher risk of tooth decay, many dentists suggest that juice drinking plays a significant influence.

Our friend Dr. Helgerson, who is a dentist in Grand Junction Co, shares that three characteristics make fruit juice such a bad drink for growing teeth:

Sugar Content: As you might expect, the more sugar drinks your child consumes, the more likely they are to develop cavities.

Nature of Acidity: Citrus juices in particular, such as orange juice, are highly acidic. These acids can dissolve tooth enamel, leaving the teeth fragile, sensitive, and susceptible to decay.

Method of Serving: The more juice your child drinks during the day, the more sugars accumulate around their teeth and gums, encouraging tooth decay and gum disease.

What to Drink in Its Place

While the amount of sugar in beverages targeted toward children may appear overwhelming at first, there is no need to panic! Dr. Hobfoll, the best pediatric dentist in SLC, explains that there are still plenty of tasty drinks your child will like, as well as several techniques to make drinking fruit juice safer for their teeth.

You should make sure children under the age of six are drinking juice no more than 6 ounces per day, and children over the age of six glass no more than 12 ounces of fruit juices per day (as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics).

Some ways to make juice healthier for your children’s teeth and overall:

  • To minimize the impact of the fruit juice, drink in one sitting and avoid it in a sippy cup or bottle which will extend the acid attack on the teeth.
  • Make smoothies with whole fruits at home so your child gets the benefit of vitamins and fiber.

What to give your child to drink instead of juice:

  • Drink more milk at meal times, particularly low-sugar varieties such as almond, soy, rice, or whole milk, 2 % or non-fat is also okay for meal times.
  • Drink more tap water, which is both healthy and often contains the vital mineral fluoride, which can help your child’s teeth stay strong! If your little one is walking around with a bottle or sippy cup, water is the best option.

How To Prevent Cavities

Minimizing sugary drinks is a great place to start when it comes to preventing cavities. When your child consumes fruit juices, we recommend encouraging them to drink or rinse their mouth with some water.

Having a healthy diet is also very important for preventing cavities. Good food such as whole fruit and vegetables are packed with vitamins that will not only help keep your child’s teeth strong and healthy but will help their overall development.

What to Do if Your Child has a Cavity

If you suspect your child has a cavity or any other oral health issues, it is important to take them to a dentist. If you are looking for a pediatric dentist in Salt Lake City, reach out to us at Kaleidoscope Kids Dentistry! Our entire team is dedicated to making sure your child receives the best dental care possible. We also provide dental education to make sure your little one knows how to properly care for their teeth and how to prevent getting cavities in the future.

FAQ About Children's Sedation

Safe Dental Sedation For Kids

Is Sedation Safe For Kids?

The short answer is yes. But as with any medical procedure, there are always potential risks involved. That’s why it’s important to make sure you choose an experienced dentist who is honest about the potential risks and benefits of using sedation dentistry. Look for a dentist who has plenty of experience with pediatric and sedation dentistry. Don’t be afraid to ask about the specific sedation options that will be used in your child’s case. With the right dentist, sedation dentistry can be a safe and effective way to help your child through a dental procedure. At Kaleidoscope Kids Dentistry we have three safe dental sedation for kids.

Laughing Gas

Laughing gas is a great option for kids who need sedation for dental procedures. Not only is laughing gas safe and easy to use, but it also has minimal side effects, making it an ideal choice for nervous children. As the child inhales the laughing gas, they remain fully conscious and able to interact with their dentist. Which allows them to remain as relaxed and comfortable as possible throughout the procedure. Additionally, laughing gas allows children’s natural reflexes and senses to remain intact, so they can still laugh and enjoy themselves while getting the dental care they need.

Overall, laughing gas offers a drug-free approach that is both safe and effective in providing mild sedation. So if you have a child who needs special care at the dentist’s office, laughing gas should definitely be on your radar! Your youngster can now answer questions and follow orders from their Salt Lake City UT dentist.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is a common technique used in many dental offices to help kids stay relaxed during their visits. This process involves giving the child an oral medication that provides them with a sense of happiness and relaxation to enjoy their treatment without fear or anxiety. Whether it is a simple check-up or a more complex procedure, this approach helps kids feel at ease. This also allows them to cooperate more with Dr. Ari by focusing on recovering quickly and comfortably. Our friends over at Shreveport Dental Solutions also think oral conscious sedation is an effective tool for helping kids of all ages feel comfortable and happy when visiting the dentist.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is a safe and painless way for children to have their teeth extracted. Not only will it keep the child calm, but they also won’t be in any discomfort during this process. For children with extreme anxiety or gag reflexes, IV sedation is safe to have more extensive dental work done while they take a little snooze. IV sedation is administered through a small IV in the child’s hand or arm. The child will remain awake and alert, but they will be much more relaxed and comfortable. This type of sedation wears off quickly, so the child will be able to go home and resume normal activities shortly after their dental appointment.

Your Child’s First Visit to the Dentist

Everything You Need To Know About Your Child's First Appointment

Is it time for your kid’s first dentist appointment? Our team has created a space for you and your kids to enjoy. When you walk into Kaleidoscope Kids Dentistry you are stepping into your own galaxy. Our space-themed entry at our Salt Lake City office will put you in the mood for “some out of this world” dentistry.

On a recent appearance with abc4 Utah, Dr. Ari explains what it would be like going to Kaleidoscope Kids Dentistry and why it should be fun and not fearful. When your child is nervous about visiting the dentist, the greatest thing you can do is assist them in conquering their anxiety. Here are four simple suggestions to try before their next visit.

When Should I Schedule My Child’s First Trip to the Dentist

It’s never too early to start teaching your kids about dental care. In fact, taking your child to the dentist for the first visit by the time they turn 1 year of age, is a great way to get them started on a life of healthy oral habits. Taking your child for consistent dental visits will help your child become familiar and comfortable with the dental office environment. This will help reduce anxiety and fear associated with dental visits in the future and promote a positive attitude toward oral care.

By taking your child to the dentist from a young age we will also be able to monitor the growth and development of their teeth, jaw, and bite. This will allow for earlier detection of any potential orthodontic issues and we can recommend treatment if necessary.

Should Your Child See a Pediatric Dentist or a Family Dentist?

Pediatric dentists specialize in providing dental care specifically for infants, children, and adolescents. We undergo 2 years of additional training beyond dental school that equips us with the knowledge and skills necessary to address the unique dental needs of children.

Family dentists, on the other hand, are general dentists who treat patients of all ages, including children. While they may not have the same specialized training in pediatric dentistry as pediatric dentists, they still provide valuable dental care for children.

If your child is nervous about visiting the dentist, we recommend going to a pediatric dentist as they will have more knowledge and experience to help your child overcome anxiety.

What to Expect at Your First Dental Appointment

Before you schedule that first appointment, it’s worth having a discussion with your children about what to expect. Explain that the dentists will take a look at their teeth and might count them or use a special mirror to see all the way in the back. And while it’s normal for kids to feel a little bit anxious about visiting the dentists, assure them that it will be over before they know it and that they can win prizes for good behavior.  By preparing your children ahead of time, you can help ensure that their first dental visit is a positive experience.

Tell Dr. Ari About Your Kid’s Dental History

It is important to give pediatric dentists a thorough health history at your child’s first visit. This will help Dr. Ari better understand any potential oral health issues that may be affecting your child and make more informed decisions when it comes to developing an appropriate treatment plan. In addition, if you know that your child can sometimes be stubborn or defiant in other situations, it is important to let the dentist know this prior to any restoration procedures, such as getting a cavity filled. This will allow the Dri. Ari to take any necessary measures ahead of time to ensure that children have a positive and comfortable experience at the dentist.

Overall, keeping your child’s dental health history up-to-date and communicating openly and honestly with their dentists are key factors in maintaining optimal oral health for years to come. Our friends over at Stuart Dentist, the best dentist in Stuart FL, shares that when our family keeps us informed we can better serve you.

Participate in Games

how to choose the right pediatric dentist

One thing that all parents can agree on is that their kids love playing games. So, take advantage of this mutual admiration. Make a game out of their next trip to the dentist’s office.

Playing pretend is a terrific place to start. All you have to do is pretend to be a dentist and have your youngster be your patient. Brush and count their teeth gently with a toothbrush. As you “work,” explain what you’re doing and why dental health is so essential to your child’s teeth. When you’re finished, let your youngster switch positions and try again.

Avoid anything that may frighten your youngster further with whatever game you try. What we mean is that if you play pretend, don’t make drilling noises, and don’t go into depth on treatment your child might not even require. This might be illogical, and further scare them.

Plan Their Appointment Strategically

You are more familiar with your children than we are. If you know your child is grumpy first thing in the morning, postpone their appointment until later in the day.

Check if your youngster has eaten lately and received enough sleep the night before. This way, they’re more inclined to be upbeat when sitting in a chair. Of course, tantrums and poor moods are difficult to foresee, but planning reduces their probability of occurring.

You might also bring their favorite stuffed animal with you for the appointment to make them feel more at ease. Sometimes just knowing they have a buddy with them is enough to make them feel assured.

Anxiety is something our pediatric dentists understand. Our Salt Lake, UT pediatric dentist, has seen their fair share of apprehensive youngsters who would rather be anywhere than the office. However, you may be confident that everyone on our team has been taught to explain everything in simple terms and as stress-free as possible

Taking Care of Your Child’s Teeth At Home

cavity prevention tips pediatric dentist slc

When you have your first visit with us, we will be able to provide you with advice on how you can help take care of your child’s teeth at home. While we want to promote independence and educate your child on how to take care of their own teeth, there are ways you can help get them into a healthy routine.

Encourage your child to brush their teeth at least twice a day, in the morning and before bedtime. Try and make it a fun and engaging activity by using a colorful toothbrush, playing their favorite song, or a two-minute timer to ensure they brush for the recommended duration. We also suggest investing in floss pics to make it easier for your child to floss on their own. Building this habit from a young age will help them carry on healthy dental habits as they grow. It’s great for your child to practice brushing and flossing, but they are going to need your help until they can tie their shoes quickly.

We also suggest limiting sticky and chewy foods, such as candies, gummies, and dried fruits, that can cling to the teeth and increase the risk of cavities. The Canadian Dental Association states, “When your child eats or drinks sugars, the germs (bacteria) in your child’s mouth mix with the sugars to make a mild acid. This acid attacks the hard outer layer of teeth (also called enamel). It can make holes (or cavities) in the teeth.” To avoid this damage they recommend to, “Keep good snacks handy where your child can get them. Have carrot sticks or cheese cubes on the bottom shelf of the fridge,” and “Do not give your child sugar-rich foods that stay in the mouth for a long time like gum with sugar in it, suckers (or lollipops) and other hard candy. Stay away from soft, sticky sweets that get stuck in the mouth such as toffee, raisins and rolled-up fruit snacks or fruit leather.”

Kids Dentist, Dr. Ari Hobfoll

What to Do If Your Child Has a Loose Baby or Permanent Tooth

You and your child have a lot to look forward to when your youngster loses a tooth for the first time But, before that baby tooth wiggles its way out of your child’s mouth, let’s discuss how to deal with a loose baby tooth. Below, Dr. Hobfoll, the best pediatric dentist in SLC, shares his tips and tricks.

Be Aware of Your Child’s Emotions

First, we recommend assuring your child that this is a regular part of development. It can be scary for your kiddos! So, if kids are worried about losing a tooth, children’s books can help soothe and entertain them.

Make Them Crunchy, Whole Snacks

Crunchy and wholesome meals like carrot sticks and apple slices can aid in the natural—and nutritious—falling out of a tooth.

Encourage Gentle Wriggling

There’s no need for youngsters to yank or tug; have your child try to gently wriggle their tooth with their tongue, or clean hands should suffice. If moving the teeth causes discomfort, it may not be ready to come out yet.

If a tooth is entirely ready but refuses to come out, you can assist your child without resorting to a thread and a doorknob. Instead, give our pediatric dentist office in SLC a call for some ideas on getting that baby tooth to the Tooth Fairy.

What Do I Do If My Child’s Tooth is Loose Before Its Time?

Our kids dentist in Muray Utah explains that although baby teeth are just transitory, they are vital to your child’s development. They aid in speech production, eating, and chewing, and act as placeholders for permanent teeth to erupt in the proper location and at the appropriate time.

There are some instances why a loose baby tooth necessitates a trip to the dentist:

  • Baby teeth often fall out over a period of years, typically between the ages of 6 and 12. Because children’s teeth tend to fall out in the same sequence they came in, if a molar becomes loose before the front teeth begin to wiggle, contact your dentist.
  • If your child has a fall, a sports injury, or any other type of event that causes a tooth or teeth to become loose, contact your doctor or dentist right away. They will use high tech dental technology, like an intraoral camera, to ensure there are no major injuries or the possibility of infection.
  • Make an appointment with your child’s dentist if you notice a tooth that should not be loose.

Finally, we’ve been discussing loose baby teeth, but loose permanent teeth are a very different story.

Loose Permanent Teeth

If your child has a loose permanent tooth due to an injury, a faulty bite, or night-time bruxism (tooth-grinding), or for any other reason, you must schedule an appointment right once. Then, our pediatric dentist in Murray Utah will be able to identify the source of the problem and propose some solutions. Also, make sure your child only eats soft foods and eats on the other side of the loose tooth. Instead of brushing and flossing, use gentle rinsing to clean the area.

How to Choose the Right Pediatric Dentist

Reviews Family Dentist Murray Utah

How to Choose the Right Pediatric Dentist

kids dentist murray utah

Kids Dentist, Dr. Ari Hobfoll

What to Look for When Choosing a Pediatric Dentist

Pediatric dentists treat children’s particular requirements. After graduating from dental school, a pediatric dentist gets two to three years of specialty training. After that, they restrict their practice to addressing the oral health needs of babies, children, and adolescents, especially those with specific health requirements. Today on the blog, our dentist for kids Salt Lake City discusses how to choose the right pediatric dentist.

Begin a Lifetime of Great Oral Health

Choosing a pediatric dentist near me to entrust the health and beauty of your child’s smile is a big step. Thus, making a good first impression at the dentist may impact children’s attitudes about dentistry for the rest of their life, so you’ll want to ensure that your youngster is at ease with the doctor and staff.

Your child’s dental experience should be one they remember for the rest of their life. So make sure it will bring a grin to your child’s face.

Choosing a pediatric dentist near me may be a complex undertaking, so it’s a good idea to get a referral from someone you trust. Whether it’s a friend, coworker, or family member, they’ll most likely be delighted to hear about their child’s dentist experience.

Research Your Pediatric Dentist’s Experience & Education

First, do some research after you’ve compiled a list of a few pediatric dentists. Learn about their educational history, where they went to school, and what kind of continuing education or specialty training they’ve had. Additionally, ensure the candidate is a licensed member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry before scheduling an appointment. This assures that they are current on the most recent and successful clinical practices.

Choose a Pediatric Dentist Who Makes Your Child Comfortable

It is critical that your child feels at ease with the pediatric dentist. Is the doctor’s bedside demeanor pleasant? Do you believe they are paying attention to your concerns? Is the staff nice and helpful? Is there a friendly atmosphere at the office that your youngster enjoys? Our kids dentist near me highly recommends considering all of these while selecting a pediatric denist in Murray Utah

Ask Your Pediatric Dentist Tons of Questions

Don’t be scared to ask questions during your initial session. That is, after all, why you are there! You must grasp every element of your child’s oral health and the various treatment choices. The more you know about your child’s oral health, the better decisions you can make.

Below, our friends at Park Boulevard, dentist in Pinellas Park FL, shares a few things to think about.

  • Is the office close to your home or workplace so that appointments are as handy as possible?

National Dentist Day - Get to Know Dr. Ari

Every year on March 6th, National Dentist’s Day is observed. It was created to express gratitude and respect for dentists of all kinds. It’s also a means to raise awareness about dentistry, so parents and kids can learn more about caring for their teeth. Today on the blog, we let you know all about your Pediatric Dentist in SLC, Dr. Ari.

Where It All Began

Dr. Ari is enthusiastic about Pediatric Dentistry, and it is his objective to provide the best care possible for all types of children. It all started when Dr. Ari attended Temple University’s School of Dentistry after graduating from Skidmore College with a degree in Molecular Biology. Then, he finished his Hospital Pediatric Residency. Additionally, Dr. Ari explains that after that, he fell in love with pediatric dentistry and knew it was his career.

Dr. Ari, the best kids dentist in SLC, picked the name Kaleidoscope Kids Dentistry for one simple reason: the world is a kaleidoscope of people. We all adore, laugh, and hug our children the same way. Thus, Dr. Ari wanted to establish a welcoming environment for all types of children and families. Assisting Patients in Overcoming Their Fears

Additionally, Dr. Ari’s favorite aspect of dentistry is assisting people in overcoming their phobias. Our kids dentist Murray Utah explains that dental anxiety is a significant issue for both children and adults, and it frequently leads to patients postponing dental work as a result. As follows, Dr. Ari urges parents to be aware that anxiety can be passed on to their children even if it is unintended. He says that, while many individuals dislike going to the dentist, it is the responsibility of parents to be active in their children’s dental visits. As follow, this will help develop excellent oral habits at home. Of course, your child learns straight from you!

A Dentist, Even at Home

Dr. Ari, our pediatric dentist Murray Utah, enjoys instilling good oral habits in his family. Additionally, he owns both a manual and an electronic toothbrush, which he alternates depending on his mood. Dr. Ari loves to use Crest Bubblegum Sparkle Toothpaste to make brushing his teeth more enjoyable. Of course, he always follows up with cinnamon floss and alcohol-free Listerine Mouthwash.

Outside of Kaleidoscope, You Can Find Dr. Ari…

Dr. Ari enjoys spending time with his family away from the practice of dentistry. In addition, he enjoys skiing, playing the guitar, and supporting environmental causes. He loves to sing songs about dentistry, and has even come up with a few jingles that he’s played for patients!

Gum disease in children: What you need to know

Gum disease is defined as an inflammation of the gums and abnormal bone loss that supports your teeth in place. As follows, this condition is often caused by plaque, which nests strictly at the gum line.  Thus, plaque is usually produced by poor dental hygiene. Interestingly, most people think gum disease is something that happens to older adults only. However, this is not the case. Our Pediatric Dentist Murray Utah explains that gum disease can happen to your kids. Today on the blog, we are discussing what you need to know about gum disease in children.

What is Gum Disease?

First, let’s begin with discussing what gum disease is. As follows, there are two forms of gum disease that most dentists are concerned about. These are gingivitis and periodontal disease. Additionally, periodontal disease is usually the more serious of the two, developing following an episode of untreated gingivitis.

Additionally, our Pediatric Dentist SLC explains that he works hard to eliminate gum disease symptoms and educate patients as early as possible in a child’s life. At Kaleidoscope Kids Dentistry, we strive to instill proper oral hygiene practices because gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. While symptoms are addressed when children are young, they are more likely to retain their bright, full grins throughout adulthood!

If you suspect your child has gum disease, please don’t panic! Kaleidoscope Kids Dentistry is here to help. Our pediatric dentist near me uses cutting-edge technology, like an intraoral camera, to treat gum disease comfortably and effectively.

What Exactly Is Gingivitis in Children?

Gingivitis is a minor periodontal disease that causes gum swelling, redness, and irritation. Thus, this disorder is often caused by poor dental hygiene. Dr. Boals, family dentist in Colorado Springs, explains that if detected early enough, gum disease can be treated with continuous brushing, flossing, and visits to the dentist. Depending on the severity of your child’s problem, your kids dentist near me may prescribe an oral rinse to assist treat and rebuilding the damaged gum line.

“Gum Disease in children is often caused by plaque, which nests strictly at the gum line.  Plaque is usually produced by poor dental hygiene and comprises a mixture of food, saliva, and potentially hazardous germs.” – Dr. Ari Hobfoll, Pediatric Dentist in Salt Lake City, Utah

What Exactly Is Periodontal Disease in Children?

Periodontal disease, commonly known as periodontitis, is the most serious type of gum disease and is far more difficult to cure than gingivitis. This dangerous gum infection can cause lasting gum damage and possibly jeopardize the integrity of the jaw bone. In addition, if left untreated, periodontitis can cause tooth loss and, in certain situations, heart and lung problems. Periodontitis therapy usually entails more regular and thorough dental cleanings, during which the dentist cleans the pockets around the teeth and the surrounding bone.

Gum Disease Signs and Symptoms in Kids

Some people with gum disease exhibit symptoms, while others do not. Even so, if your child exhibits any of the following symptoms, they should see a dentist straight away:

  • Bad breath that persists
  • Teeth Erosion
  • Sensitivity with hot or cold temperatures
  • Gum bleeding when brushing and flossing
  • Gums that are swollen, red, or sensitive
